December 16: Angora Français

French angora is so exquisite, it really is in a class of its own. Angora is from the angora breed of rabbit, not to be confused with the angora goat.

Angora goats give us mohair. Angora yarn comes from fluffy bunny rabbits.

The fur is plucked or brushed from the rabbit by hand as they molt. It can be a time consuming process, in that one needs to pluck the fur before it falls into the cage, becoming matted.

Whenever you see low-cost angora, especially in ready-to-wear, one should be concerned. I once spied a cheap angora sweater in Walmart, that caused me to raise an eyebrow. Cheap, mass produced angora is too good to be true. In China unscrupulous breeders will shear and mistreat these cute little bunnies. Europe has even had issues with bad breeders. That’s not cool. And that’s how they get angora on the cheap.

Anny Blatt sources its angora from the most reputable breeders in France, with high ethical standards. So you can rest assured that the fur for your yarn was gently plucked by hand.

Anny Blatt’s ABSOLU is one of the loveliest angoras I have ever seen. From some of the oldest breeds of French Angora rabbits, available in completely natural shades. They are gorgeous!
