Mega knits are all the rage! Super-chunky blankets are making their rounds again on Pinterest. We get asked about these all the time. Here’s the deal. Super bulky single-ply yarn THAT thick will shed and pill like crazy. And it will cost a small fortune. Considering I sell $400 vicuña without batting an eye, I am all about luxury yarns. But these super mega yarns are ridiculous.
For a decent wool (that will still shed and look like poo) it would take 2 skeins at minimum of $50 a skein to knit something that would fit tightly around your neck. By my best guesstimation, a tiny baby blankETTE would be $500, a small lap throw $1,200-$1,500, and a throw size would be around $2,500 . . . for something that is going to pill, shed, and look like a matted animal in no time.
I just can’t in good conscious sell that to anyone. Some Pinterest ideas are just doomed to #fail!
You can still mega knit, and get nice results. You just have to take the size down a notch, or two…
Blue Sky’s BULKY is our go-to yarn for mega knitting. Available in a rainbow of colors, this alpaca/merino blend is soft and springy. $14.50, 100gm/45yds
If you have the itch to make a mega blanket, check out this Bayport Throw pattern. It is a complimentary pattern courtesy of Blue Sky Fibers. Knit with double strands of BULKY on a size 36 in a 1×1 rib so that the edges won’t roll. You can also make it in stockinette stitch, if you don’t mind the rolling edges.
If you’d like something even chunkier, try three, or four, or more strands together with these biggies!
Blue Sky has great patterns for garments, accessories and kids for BULKY:
