Istanbul Style

We were over the moon when Urth Yarns debuted seven years ago, quickly introducing this distinct collection of hand-dyed yarns from Turkey. Throughout the years, we've witnessed this line flourish alongside a talented group of designers collaborating with this remarkable company.

One designer, in particular, has caught our eye. Yiğitcan, a textile designer from Istanbul, Turkey, is the creative force behind many of our favorite Urth creations. Their incorporation of surprising details and bold shapes, often paired with beautifully blended colors, creates captivating garments and accessories that are engaging to knit.

You will often spot Yiğitcan modeling their stunning designs. Slip-licious Stripes is a quick and easy cowl, utilizing slip stitches to break up the striping pattern of the Uneek yarn. It only takes one skein in the worsted weight.

Another enjoyable one-skein project is Dorid, which draws inspiration from the colorful creatures of oceans deep. This easy and relaxing knit keeps it fun with simple short rows and the colorful stripes of Uneek in the fingering weight.

This elegantly cabled hat features a slouchy silhouette, giving it a relaxed fit while keeping the look stylish and modern. The Unbound Hat requires just one skein of Harvest or 16 in the worsted weight.

Dip is a dark or neutral-colored skinny isosceles triangle that dips into a more vibrant color at its narrow tip, with the colors cleverly transitioning in the middle via stripes. It can be worked with either Harvest or 16 in the fingering weight, requiring only one skein for each shade.

We love Dubblo, a classic fitted beanie featuring two shades of Spiral Grain sport to create a reversible hat. The edge is beautifully accented with a Latvian braid.

The Trichotomic Balaclava is an ideal project for honing your skills in two-color brioche, worked both flat and in the round! Drawing inspiration from the number three, it features three sections, three edges, and three increase repeats. Anyone who spends time outdoors in chilly weather will truly appreciate this cozy balaclava as a gift, crafted from the luxuriously soft 16 Worsted yarn. You'll need just one skein each of two contrasting colors, available in a fantastic 60-color range! And yes, we stock all sixty shades.

Abundance is inspired by traditional Anatolian Kilims, incorporating the meaningful Elibelinde, Comb, and Eye motifs into a coordinating cowl and beanie design. Each piece is worked with 16 Fingering, requiring only one skein each of two contrasting shades.

The Ulukayn scarf is a showstopper inspired by the tree of life in Turkish mythology, reimagined as a skinny scarf constructed with traveling slip stitches and nupps. This beautiful creation is knit with two Spiral Grain Sport and one Harvest or 16 Fingering.

Trixture is formed with garter and stockinette triangles that imbricate and expand from the bottom up, creating an upside-down triangle. This bandana-style cowl is knit both flat and in the round, featuring a tessellation of triangular textures made with three skeins of Spiral Grain in a light worsted weight.

Inspired by softness and the checkered pattern of its fabric, Flannel takes its name from its woven counterpart. This timeless and reversible scarf is constructed with a garter stitch, playing with slip stitches to achieve the look of a woven checkered fabric. With a vast array of color options, Flannel offers endless possibilities, utilizing 16 Worsted and its 60-color palette. You will need two skeins of each of two contrasting shades to create this piece.

Yakamoz, inspired by moonlight reflecting on the sea, captures this shimmering effect through garter ridges interspersed with slip stitches and mosaic patterns, resulting in a beautiful triangular shawl. The term "Yakamoz" translates to "sea sparkles" in Turkish. This design is knit using two complementary shades of Spiral Grain Sport, with two skeins required for each color.

Simoom winds, blowing from the deserts of Northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, play with sand and shape the dunes into sand waves. This V-shaped, reversible shawl represents the Simoom wind and its aesthetical creations: dunes and sand waves. This unique shawl is worked with three skeins each of two contrasting shades of 16 Fingering.

Noxolis is a stunning scarf that transitions from a syncopated zigzag gradient to a clever motif constructed with increases and decreases. This brioche lover's delight is worked with six shades of Harvest or 16 Fingering.

Yiğitcan's creations extend beyond accessories. The Skyward pullover draws inspiration from enchanting branches gradually reaching for the sky. This beautifully cabled yoke design is knit in the round using 16 Worsted yarn, with a broad range of size options.

What a breathtaking and inspiring portfolio of designs! Yiğitcan's talent is truly remarkable! We can't wait to see what they come up with next!

Hopefully, we've inspired you to create one of Yiğitcan's designs!
