Pure Alpaca
We love alpaca – both the animal and the yarn they produce. Alpaca fiber is truly unique. Unlike wool, it features a lightweight, dry, hollow structure that lacks lanolin. This unique composition enables the fiber to capture small pockets of air, effectively retaining heat when necessary and releasing it when it's not. This property also makes alpaca ideal for warmer climates; the same hollow structure that keeps you warm in winter helps to expel moisture in summer, drawing sweat away from your body and allowing it to evaporate to keep you cool.
Alpaca fibers have lower water retention compared to wool, which gives them a nearly water-resistant quality. Additionally, these fibers are incredibly strong and durable, capable of bending up to 20,000 times before they break, ranking them among the strongest woolen fibers.
Alpaca, as in the animal - well, they are hard not to love. They are just so cute! Besides being completely adorable, they differ from other wool-producing animals like sheep and goats due to their lack of hooves. Their soft, padded feet are gentle on the natural landscape, preserving the environment and contributing to sustainability.
Rowan has introduced an exquisite, superfine alpaca to the collection this fall, and we couldn't be more thrilled! Pure Alpaca is exceptionally soft and offers a delightful drape. We are particularly excited about the range of colors. While fall and winter yarns are usually presented in dull, muted tones, Rowan has taken a refreshing route with Pure Alpaca, showcasing vibrant, jewel-like shades that work wonderfully in colorwork designs or stand out beautifully on their own! Its sport-weight gauge allows for the creation of lightweight garments that drape beautifully.
Softy Tailored presents beautifully crafted, timeless knits from talented designers Lisa Richardson and Martin Storey. It harmoniously combines simple textures with vibrant color patterns, showcasing the rich jewel tones of this remarkable new yarn.
