With the numerous styles and trends we’ve seen come and go over the years, the one thing that has remained consistent is SOCKS! One of the first yarns we stocked way back in the 90’s was sock yarn from Stahl of Germany.
Mom loved knitting socks, and spent countless hours researching different construction and developing better techniques. While consolidating 25 years of class instructions onto one working computer, I decided it was time to reintroduce her passion for socks to a new generation of sock knitters.
Realizing that today’s knitter wouldn’t necessarily care to sit and knit random heel and toe swatches, I decided to incorporate these construction techniques into unique sock designs and our Sock Boxes were born!
The Sock Box isn’t just sock yarn, nor is it simply a sock pattern. It truly is a virtual classroom in a box. I have poured every ounce of mom’s knowledge into these patterns, along with a few perfecting finishes of my own, with step-by-step instructions on how to make a PERFECT sock. Anyone can write a simple sock pattern. Our instructions take sock knitting a step further, with detailed information on knitting perfect socks without unpleasant holes or gaps.
Sock Box No. 1 features a hand painted Peruvian wool/bamboo blend, Pilsner Pleating, an adapted Niantic Heel and Toe, German short rows and more.
I dyed the yarn and coordinated colorways myself for Sock Box No. 2, which features mind-boggling (but easy to knit) Helix stripes, Peasant Heel, and Wedge Toe.
Each sock box includes artisan beaded stitch markers, a project bag, and full-color photo instructions. $75/box, which is quite a deal when you consider what all you are getting in this box. The instructions and detailed explanation of techniques are unlike any other!
Mom also loved for things to match…precisely! When knitting with the modern color shifting yarns and such, matching colors at seams can be nearly impossible. Mom didn’t care how much yarn she’d waste, but she’d find the point where the colors matched no matter what!
The current trend is PERFECTLY MATCHING socks. She would have loved this!
It started with Schoppel’s DasPaar. DasPaar is packaged in 50 gm skeins, with each sock knit from a separate skein wound so that they begin and end at the same point for a perfect match.
Then Urth Yarns got in the game with their matching Uneek Striped Sock Kits. Urth Yarns just delivered this limited edition Christmas color!
And now Regia has taken it to a new level with their PAIRFECT line of sock yarn.
The Pairfect socks are knit with one-100gm skein. The yellow you see in the skein is only the starter thread, and detailed instructions are printed inside each ball band. Super cool! We have both the Rainbow Colors and fair isle prints designed by Arne & Carlos. Regia takes it a step further with their NO KNOT guarantee, for uninterrupted patterning.
And I know mom would have flipped over Addi’s new FlexiFlip needles. These are the bomb! This revolutionary new way of working in the round is a fabulous alternative to traditional double points and the 2-circ/magic loop methods.
I incorporated instruction on using the FlexiFlip needles into our Sock Box patterns. Not only have they made the socks easier to knit, they have really simplified instruction writing. This allows me to give more clarity, especially when it comes to the finer technical points.
Now that I hopefully have everyone excited to make socks, I have some fun prizes to give away today.
Everyone gets a free download of our Basic Sock pattern. (Oops, you’re too late, however our pattern is available for purchase any time!) This is the go-to pattern for many a sock knitter.
