December 15: Twist and Match

25 years ago interchangeable needle sets were a nice concept, but in reality they were terrible. Back then the Boye Needlemaster was the only game in town. They came apart, had horrid cables, and the aluminum needles left a lot to be desired.
Interchangeable needle technology has come a long way!  We have several fantastic and affordable options.

We love LYKKE needles! Most interchangeable sets stop at a size 11, but LYKKE includes sizes 4-17. They also offer a short-tip set with sizes 3-10.5. Best of all, LYKKE needles are interchangeable with Knitter’s Pride interchangeables so if you’ve already invested in a Knitter’s Pride set there’s no need to buy all new cables and such.
LYKKE needles are now available in three wood tones: Driftwood, Indigo, and Umber. Standard Sets $125/Short Tip Sets $99.95

The new limited edition Knit & Purr set from Knitter’s Pride is packaged in a super cute box and includes a tote bag. Inside are sizes 4-11 of the new Millennium needles, a birch laminate in striking red/black shades. $125

If you prefer a metal tip, you’ll absolutely love ChiaoGoo TWIST featuring surgical steel with a pointy lace tip, and their signature flexible red cables all packaged in an attractive fabric case. $170, size 2-15 tips.

You don’t have to invest in a set to enjoy the benefits of interchangeable needles. Shortly after various sets starting hitting the market, the manufacturers began to offer the tips and cables individually. Initially they were intended as supplements for knitters who had already purchased a set, however they quickly took on a life of their own as a stand-alone product.
One standard length tip (5″) can be combined with different cables to make 24″, 32″, 40″, 47″, and 60″ needles. One tip can make at least 5 cable lengths! And the cables are priced as low as $2.75/cable. This is far more affordable than purchasing multiple fixed circulars in different lengths.
The short tips (3.5-4″) are designed for 16″-20″ lengths. You need the shorter tip with these short lengths; the standard tips are just too long to loop around and still be able to maneuver. You can also use the short tips with the longer cables.
One downside of interchangeable needles can be a more limited availability of sizes. It is difficult to manufacture one connection that will work with needles, large and small. The size ranges for the needles we stock are:

If you like a metal needle, ChiaoGoo has an incredible range available:

If you’re in to microknitting, ChiaoGoo has new Shorties with 2″ & 3″ tips ranging in size from 000-3 to make super short circular needles ranging from 9″to 14″ in circumference.
These short lengths and small tip sizes allow you to knit socks and such in the round without double points and the likes, although you have to knit pretty daintily! Sets include sizes 0-3, including half-sizes. Individual needles include both the 2″ & 3″ tips in one package, with sizes 000-3 available.
Shortie Set/$100; Individual Needles/$22

Needle sets of any kind are always nice to own. There’s nothing better than having a broad range of sizes packaged in one case.
I still love my LYKKE Double Point sets:

And you can now buy LYKKE double points individually. Sizes 0-13 are in stock now.
Crocheters, you really need to try LYKKE’s hooks. They are so nice, and available in sets or individually. The sets include sizes E – M, and individually sizes D-P+. Currently LYKKE hooks are only available in the original driftwood, however we are waiting for INDIGO and UMBER in the sets. Hopefully we’ll see those soon.

It only seems fitting that I give away needles and hooks today! Three lucky readers will win a pair of LYKKE interchangeable needles with a cable -or- a LYKKE crochet hook. Simply state in the comments: Sorry, drawing is over!

  • Needle or Hook Size, 4-19 for knit/D-P for crochet
  • Cable Length (for needles)
  • Driftwood, Indigo, or Umber color (sorry crocheters, driftwood is the only option at this time)

You have until midnight!

I use my Boye Needlemaster tips with red Chiaogoo cables and size “S” adapters; works great, and I have so many more length options!
So, since I’m happy with my interchangeable status, I think I’d like to try a size G crochet hook. I love the few rosewood hooks I have, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one!

Needle size 8 standard length and a cable somewhere around 36 inches. I’m a shawl knitter, so cable length is not imperative. The driftwood color looks gorgeous, I love it.
